| Taking
the Pain out of Policy and Programme Development...
Many schools in Nottingham City have already developed Healthy
Schools Programme accredited sex and relationships policy and curriculum
through our support packages over the past 2 years.
We run free, bespoke training and support packages for primary and
secondary schools to develop their curriculum and programmes for
SRE so that they meet the required standard and ensure that the
work counts as evidence for Ofsted and Healthy Schools Accreditation. |
| Are you meeting the requirements for Sex
and Relationships Education? |
All school are required to
have a current SRE policy.
In Nottingham City we have a target that 100% Schools achieve the
Standard for policy and programme for Sex and Relationships Education
by Dec 2006.
What should be in place?
The school should have a policy that includes:
- A nominated coordinator for SRE and lead governor
- A definition of SRE and how it fits within the PSHE curriculum
- Detail of the school's intended stance on the teaching
of puberty, menstruation, contraception and STIs, as well as sexual
and other relationships to ensure that young people from different
cultures and or faith groups, both genders and young people with
differing sexualities, feel included and have their needs met.
- How the school will manage issues of confidentiality in the
event of disclosures
- Protocols for referral to outside agencies/support services
And that:
- Takes account of local circumstances
- Is developed through a whole-school consultation process
- Considers the needs of the pupils and the school
- Meets the National Healthy School Standard (Ofsted)
To enable the remaining schools to do this we are putting increased
resources towards support schools. Over 40 schools have successfully
participated in our workdays programme so far. The response has
been so great that we are running workdays in this Spring term again. |
| What support is available? |
Because we know that the most valuable
resource for teachers is time we provide task-focused workdays for
sex and relationships education (and drug education). We pay supply
cover for you to come to the College Street Centre and to use our
resources and support to draft your policy and programme. We will
provide you with all the tools you need to write and plan implementation
of the policy and programme back in school with the added bonus
of having the work you do accredited as part of Healthy Schools
Status.
We will provide:
- reimbursement of supply cover costs for the day for up to two
staff
- a further two teacher-days supply cover reimbursement back in
school to assist implementation tasks set out in your action plan
- training and awareness activities to engage staff, pupils, parents
and governors
- relevant information and key documents
- computers and drafting tools (or bring your laptop / memory
stick if you prefer)
- time to discuss concerns and support to resolve them
- support with action planning
- one-to-one follow up and training support back in school
- key resources for review
- free resources to take away
- Accreditation for the work as part of the Healthy Schools Standard
for PSHE
- Ongoing support to achieve complete Healthy School Status

| How do I gain accreditation for SRE - what's
involved? |
The Workday Programme consist of four
elements:
- An initial meeting with the SRE advisor from the Healthy
Schools Team that will enable you to guage how much work
you will need to do to meet the requirements. We will provide
the first pack of materials at the briefing which contains information,
audits for policy and programme, consultation tools and everything
you need to plan for the work.
- Consultation with pupils, staff, parents, governors
and pupils on key aspects of SRE policy and curriculum. If it
is possible to do this before the workday it will speed up the
implementation process. If not, we can action plan for it to happen
at the next possible opportunity. Don't worry if you have concerns
about how engage parents or pupils - we can share simple and effective
ways that have worked for the other 40 schools who have done this
already! We can give support to do this.
- Workdays.
This is where you spend a day actually drafting the policy and
programme - based on what you already know and planning what needs
to be done to complete the task. You have the option to do this
with a school SRE advisor at the Healthy Schools Base at College
Street or you can take non-contact time in school (or anywhere
you choose) to complete the work. We will reimburse supply cover
for up to 3 days in total per school to help you do this.
Please note: There is no long term parking at the College
St. Centre but we are only a short walk from Market Square multi-storey
car parks and tram/bus/park and ride stops
- Follow up.
After the drafting is complete we will support you back in school
in any way you need to complete the actions on your implementation
plan and get the policy ratified and disseminated and and programme
up and running. This includes any inset required for staff or
governors or support with parent participation.
(we offer a range of free, professionally facilitated sessions
that you may wish to run for parents to engage them with SRE issues
and to enable them to feedback their views)

| If you think you already meet the requirements... |
Then please let us know so that we
can award you Healthy Schools Accreditation for your work. We can
arrange to assess the work you have done as part of the Standard
for PSHE. Accreditation through Healthy Schools for SRE Policy and
Programme counts as evidence for your Ofsed self evaluation form.
