The Healthy Schools SRE team has been appointed to support schools through the various stages of developing and implementing SRE. Many Nottingham Schools are now working towards achieving Healthy School Status in the area of PSHE. SRE is firmly embedded in the PSHE programme alongside its sister themes of Healthy Eating, Physical Education and Drug & Alcohol. To receive Healthy School status schools must have programmes/policies in all of these areas.

New Pintsize Tour of 'Kids Having Kids'
Despite funding doubts at the start of the year, Pintsize Theatre production 'Kids Having Kids' will be available to City schools again in the next academic year, part funded by the Healthy Schools Programme. Look out for our letter with full details of the new funding situation and booking contacts, which will be arriving in schools this week.
More About the Play 'Kids having Kids' is a play about sexual health and teenage pregnancy for students in year 9 and above. Karen Smith is a normal 15 year old teenager living at home with her parents. The only thing that makes her different from her friends is that she is also a mother. The play tells Karen and her boyfriend Lee's story as they reflect on their actions and the decisions they have taken which have changed their lives forever.
The play asks difficult questions about how teenagers exercise choice and accept responsibility in terms of their relationships and sexual behaviour. It aims to increase awareness of sexually transmitted diseases and the consequences of becoming a parent at a very young age. Visit the Pintsize Website

Specialist Services
Teaching Sex and Relationship Education (SRE) in schools where they are a variety of cultural and religious groups can be both challenging and exciting. For an effective SRE programme to be established schools should work in partnership with all levels of the school community including pupils, teachers, school health workers, governors and parents.
The Healthy Schools Programme Team has an Asian SRE Specialist whose role is to support schools in creating and delivering an SRE package that is inclusive across cultures and religions. Research has shown that involving parents from the initial planning stage to the delivery of SRE can minimise the misunderstanding and unease that exists around the subject.
The Asian SRE specialist can: * Discuss a schools concerns in the area of religions and cultures and SRE policy and programme development. * Suggest ways of talking about the issues of religion in a sensitive and inclusive manner. * Provide information in the areas of SRE in a variety of languages. * Provide resources that may support the schools SRE delivery. * Provide staff training around religion, faiths and culture and their implications on SRE. * Support parent consultation events.
If your school is interested in accessing the support offered by the Asian SRE Specialist please contact:

| Are you meeting the requirements for Sex
and Relationships Education? |
All school are required to
have a current SRE policy.
In Nottingham City we have a target that 100% Schools achieve the
Standard for policy and programme for Sex and Relationships Education
by Dec 2006.
What should be in place?
The school should have a policy that includes:
- A nominated coordinator for SRE and lead governor
- A definition of SRE and how it fits within the PSHE curriculum
- Detail of the school's intended stance on the teaching
of puberty, menstruation, contraception and STIs, as well as sexual
and other relationships to ensure that young people from different
cultures and or faith groups, both genders and young people with
differing sexualities, feel included and have their needs met.
- How the school will manage issues of confidentiality in the
event of disclosures
- Protocols for referral to outside agencies/support services
And that:
- Takes account of local circumstances
- Is developed through a whole-school consultation process
- Considers the needs of the pupils and the school
- Meets the National Healthy School Standard (Ofsted)
To enable the remaining schools to do this we are putting increased
resources towards support schools. Over 40 schools have successfully
participated in our workdays programme so far. The response has
been so great that we are running workdays in this Spring term again. |
| How do I gain accreditation for SRE - what's
involved? |
The Workday Programme consist of four
elements:
- An initial meeting with the SRE advisor from the Healthy
Schools Team that will enable you to guage how much work
you will need to do to meet the requirements. We will provide
the first pack of materials at the briefing which contains information,
audits for policy and programme, consultation tools and everything
you need to plan for the work.
- Consultation with pupils, staff, parents, governors
and pupils on key aspects of SRE policy and curriculum. If it
is possible to do this before the workday it will speed up the
implementation process. If not, we can action plan for it to happen
at the next possible opportunity. Don't worry if you have concerns
about how engage parents or pupils - we can share simple and effective
ways that have worked for the other 40 schools who have done this
already! We can give support to do this.
- Workdays.
This is where you spend a day actually drafting the policy and
programme - based on what you already know and planning what needs
to be done to complete the task. You have the option to do this
with a school SRE advisor at the Healthy Schools Base at College
Street or you can take non-contact time in school (or anywhere
you choose) to complete the work. We will reimburse supply cover
for up to 3 days in total per school to help you do this.
Please note: There is no long term parking at the College
St. Centre but we are only a short walk from Market Square multi-storey
car parks and tram/bus/park and ride stops
- Follow up.
After the drafting is complete we will support you back in school
in any way you need to complete the actions on your implementation
plan and get the policy ratified and disseminated and and programme
up and running. This includes any inset required for staff or
governors or support with parent participation.
(we offer a range of free, professionally facilitated sessions
that you may wish to run for parents to engage them with SRE issues
and to enable them to feedback their views)

| If you think you already meet the requirements... |
Then please let us know so that we
can award you Healthy Schools Accreditation for your work. We can
arrange to assess the work you have done as part of the Standard
for PSHE. Accreditation through Healthy Schools for SRE Policy and
Programme counts as evidence for your Ofsed self evaluation form.
