Really well thought out interactive website with something for most ages, easy to use with big mouse clicking areas and clear intructions. Bit of a drawback in that there is no sound so user has to have a certain literacy level to engage. Pictures are great for younger kids and there are lots of health-based activities and general games. Clear emphasis on emotional wellbeing, participation and social learning. Very useful as another tool in your PSHE planning. Covers all areas of Healthy Schools themes and has pupil and teacher material.

Would have liked a bit more pictoral variety but definitely worth buying if you're trying to find resources to match an existing scheme or topic.

Publisher:  www.l8r.uk.net
Christina Phillips (Healthy Schools Team) My Rating: starstarstarstarstar
A new, innovative and award winning web-based resource called 'L8r' is now available for schools.

'L8r' is a secondary, interactive resource, using 2 main storylines to address the themes of sex and relationships, sexual health, drug and alcohol awareness and related issues such as self-esteem and peer pressure; and the realities of early parenthood, fatherhood and family relationships.

L8r won a 2005 Royal Television Society Education Award and has just been nominated for another RTS award this year as well as a children's BAFTA . Last year the RTS jury said that L8r 'engages its young audience in thinking and debating some challenging but very real issues...it presents some thought-provoking stories which are tackled in a sensitive, yet supportive way.'

We can thoroughly recommend this resource - have a look at the interactive website at www.l8r.uk.net

This CD rom uses kind of cyber characters (like Max Headroom for us oldies) and covers a number of scenarios and issues - all of which are highly relevant to drug education. Could be used with smartboards or in small groups / individually. There is a variety of activities and tasks to keep things interesting. Would be very interested to see what young people think of the characters and scenarios and if they relate to them. There are copies in the Linden House Resource Centre if you want a look.

Resource Title: This Teen Life - Secondary Citizenship/PSHE
Age Range:  KS 3/4 (Drug Education)
Type:  Video
Cost:  DK
Publisher:  Channel 4
Anna (Healthy Schools) My Rating: starstarstarstar
Says this is for KS3 but I think you could definitely use it with Y10. Nice and contemporary, visually and musically, uses lyrics about sex and drugs and beats to good effect - should engage pupils well (or at least until the next music craze)
Covers a range of issues facing young people including sexual disinhibition, drug and alcohol use, and is cut from consultations and vox pop done with 1000 young people.
Would be good stimulus for discussion, drama or even a video or other media based PSHE/Citizenship project which uses documentary techniques to explore issues.

Resource Title: Life Stuff - A-Z of Drugs
Age Range:  KS 4 (Drug Education)
Type:  Video
Cost:  DK
Publisher:  Channel 4
Anna (College Street) My Rating: starstarstar
It's actually a DVD so you can hop about in the handy menu to find a particular drug. Useful information resource mixed with life stories and experiences of users. Balanced view of drugs, not all scare tactics and gloom but does bring out the risks, both physical and emotional of various drugs. There is also some harm reduction/safety information from an "expert" which was a negative for me as it only applied to one or two drugs (incl. ecstacy) and this may prove problematic if it is seen to condone drug use or suggest that it can be made safe - so a word of caution there. The alcohol section, however worked very well for me and had plenty there for a quick lesson stimulus.

Be interested to see how it goes with a class - let me know.

Resource Title: Drunk in charge of a Body ll
Age Range:  KS 3/4 (Drug Education)
Type:  Teaching Pack
Cost:  £25.00
Publisher:  Brook (www.brook.org.uk)
Anna Power (LEA) My Rating: starstarstarstarstar
This package of ready made lessons, including handouts, is packed with excellent interactive ways to help students explore the risks, effects and consequences of alcohol use. It includes activities on personal risk-taking behaviour, alcohol and relationships, alcohol and sexual behaviour as well as the law, getting help and the influence of peers and the media. It contains all the necessary links to science, PSHE, citizenship and QCA attainment statements to assist your planning. Lessons include contracts, clear learning outcomes and pathways, self assessment and self-review activities.
I'd say it is excellent value for money and gives a systematic but also 'pick and mix' approach to delivering this extremely relevant and important part of your drug education.
KS3 teacher (Nottingham City) My Rating: starstarstarstarstar

Resource Title: Pint Sized Theatre -ASH
Age Range:  KS 3 (Drug Education)
Type:  Visiting Contributor
Cost:  free
Publisher:
Anna Power (LEA) My Rating: starstarstarstar
This was a very powerful piece of drama looking at the relationships between a group of friends and their family issues. It explores the reasons why young people may misuse alcohol and contrasts this with the family permissive attitude towards tobacco - both drugs and both harmful. It raises difficult issues around unacceptable conduct when drunk and we witness the devestating consequences of loss of inhibition and control through drunkeness.

There where opportunities to question the actors in role through some hot seating.

The sheer volume of issues touched upon in the drama mean that an entire term's PSHE work could be built around the performance. The one reservation is that there may be too much and that some of the pupil needs to explore the issues further may be lost - some sensitive issues where alluded to very briefly but not necessarily followed up.

The performance does come with a pack of follow up materials and the success of this piece will stand or fall on the implementation in school. It is not a stand alone piece of work and would not be effective as such. As a starting point for a well planned scheme of work, however, it would be excellent - touching many of the issues pertinent to young people in a drug using world.

Resource Title: Indigo Brave Theatre in Education Company
Age Range:  Post 16 (Drug Education)
Type:  Visiting Contributor
Cost:
Publisher:
Parent Consultation Group (College St) My Rating: starstarstarstarstar
We commissioned Indigo Brave to create a piece of drama to engage parents to discuss substance misuse issues in relation to their children. The piece was fantastic but more than this the parents, all from Aspley and surrounding area, really got into it - one dad said "Urgh I've done that, it's just like me and my daughter - you just lose it and make things worse cos your worried" The performers facilitated discussions about the issues raised and acted out other strategies suggested by the parents - they even got some of the parents doing some acting themselves. We will definitely use them again for topic focused work.
Irene Kakoullis (Nottingham City Council) My Rating: starstarstarstarstar
This workshop has proved a real success with the parents that have attended. It is free for schools to book and can see some excellent benefits in terms of parents having the confidence to raise the subject of drug use, relationships and sex. Parents of younger children that have attended have also benefitted as it helps them to plan ahead for the 'birds and the bees talk'.

A fun non-threatening way to engage parents. Highly recommended. And a useful tool for consulting with parents on drugs education and SRE policies.
Anne Hurt (Southwark Primary) My Rating: starstarstarstarstar
Indigo Brave presented a Free Workshop for parents at Southwark. The workshop was a way of informing parents of Sex and Relationships Education as well as giving them a forum to voice their worries, concerns and opions about the topics to be covered. Parents that came were very impressed and were more than ready to contribute during the afternoon. The performance which covered Sex And Relationships from a very young child to post 16 was extremely well dramatised and immediately put the parents at ease thus enabling them to fully take part and make valuable contributions. Due to the success of this event I am now in a very good position to create a new and relevant Sex and Relationships Policy and Scheme of work with the support and help of the parents for Southwark covering both Key stages that is age appropriate. Thanks to Indigo Brave!!

Has anyone else seen these resources? All write on / wipe off laminates. There are social story scenarios and stuff about emotional literacy, health topics etc. They are very adaptable and good for mixed ability groups - great trigger activities for role play etc.

Anna Power (College Street Centre) My Rating: starstarstarstar
This really is 'Drug Education in a Box'. Teachers have worked to evolve this pack from what works for them in school. It pulls together existing video, written and CD resources and provides them in the box with a comprehensive scheme of work. It is linked to the National Healthy School Standard (so meets with best practice) It gives a set of excellent lesson plans for each year, (including ideas for establishing baseline and assessment of learning). It has all the hallmarks of a great scheme, varied activities, differentiation, extension activities, links made to the National Curriculum including Citizenship, PSHE and Science and even suggests ways to get the wider community involved.

Might sound a bit expensive but it is all there.
On Behalf of PSHE teachers (whitemoor) My Rating: starstarstarstarstar
Had a look at these as a part of our training workdays - the scheme is an excellent starting point for us - with clear lesson plans, differentiation and assessment all provided alongside a good basic set of resources to deliver the lessons. We liked it because teachers would always have a fall back plan and could substitute their own activities to meet the learning outcomes if they prefered - it organised the developmental structure in an easy to use way and will, I think, enable us to implement a drug education programme very quickly and effectively in the new year. Oh and even better - we got a free copy as part of the work day!

Resource Title: The House the Crack Built
Age Range:  KS 3 (Drug Education)
Type:  Booklet
Cost:  £5.99
Publisher:  Chronicle Books
Anna P (College St Centre) My Rating: starstarstarstarstar
This beautifully illustrated story book, providing a new take on the classic poem, creates opportunities to look at drugs issues from a community and citizenship perspective. It charts the journey of crack cocaine from the wealthy drugs barons in South America through to the real victims of drug dealing - the gangs, young 'runners' and finally a pregnant woman hooked on the drug and her addicted baby. It creates scope to discuss many issues from the devastating effects of cash cropping on struggling economies through to exploitation and the social and financial cost to communities and individuals of the drugs trade.

This book is fantastic, it can help to connect young people with the wider range of issues raised by drug misuse and dealing - buy it!
Karen (City School) My Rating: starstarstarstarstar
I also found this book a very adaptable resource. Although the class hadn't heard of the original poem it didn't matter. We used it as stimulus for a drama session exploring the issues and feelings facing the pupils in relation to drugs in their community. There were so many parallels and the pupils were able to relate to the characters even though the book is obviously based in American cities. Well worth the money - still thinking of new applications.

Resource Title: Sort Out the Scene
Age Range:  Foundation KS (Drug Education)
Type:  Game/Activity
Cost:  under £50
Publisher:  TACADE
Lynn Davison (Fairham) My Rating: starstarstarstar
I quite liked this resource - The resource is based around a set of 8 photographs to be used in group work. Each group has to identify with the characters, develop the scene by carrying out research on the set drug as well as think about what may have caused the situation and what could be done to help / support the people involved.
The resource relies on opportunities for discussion within small groups as well as giving opportunities for whole class debate.
Resource consists of 4 lesson plans with all necessary information / resources given. One drawback - In C.I.D. cards language used requires a high reading age. This limits its use. Vocabulary could be more pupil friendly .

I used it with Year 9 but our students would be below average and in another school it could be used lower down.

You can dip into the lessons as you see fit. Also the activity sheets and supplementary materials you could use in many ways to fit your situation. The photographs could be used to simply facilitate role play however I feel this would be a waste. I particularly like the way different activities and research is used to supplement the role play aspect.

Although I only used a small part of this with a group of students I intend to use it in its entirety next year as part of my drugs education programme. I thought it was excellent.
