The Children's Services Young People's Drug and Alcohol Team have published their training programme for the coming year. If you are working with young people we would recommend that you consider training for basic drugs awareness, assessment and/or target interventions as part of your CPD portfolio. Reducing Teenage Pregnancy in Nottingham City
Data announced this week has shown a reduction in Teenage Pregnancy rates of 7.3% from the 1998 baseline resulting in 36 fewer conceptions in 2007.
To further support this downward trend a new plan has been launched Preventing Unplanned Teenage Pregnancy in Nottingham A Taskforce Plan for 2009.
This is the first time Nottingham City Council, NHS Nottingham City and One Nottingham have developed a shared plan.
The plans strategy includes proposals to increase the number of schools and colleges offering contraception to pupils, improved sex and relationship education, and parenting courses to help parents support their children about sex.
Teenage pregnancy is a factor in the "cycle of poverty" that grips some parts of the City.
Children of teenage parents are more at risk of poor health and are less likely to succeed at school.
The strategy aims to make teenagers more aware of the support available to them. Young people living in deprived areas, those not engaged with education, and whose mothers were also teen mums are more at risk.
A big factor in teenage pregnancy is believed to be the low aspirations of teenagers in deprived areas. The Government's Teenage Pregnancy Unit will be advising the City on raising the aspiration of teenage girls.
