About Healthy Schools
The Four Themes

The National Healthy Schools Programme has four themes. The four core themes relate to both the school curriculum and the emotional and physical learning environment in school.

  • Personal, Social Health and Economic Education (PSHEe) – includes:
    - Sex and Relationship Education (SRE)
    - Drug Education (including alcohol, tobacco and volatile substance abuse)
  • Healthy Eating
  • Physical Activity
  • Emotional Health and Wellbeing.

PSHEE The PSHEe theme contributes to all 5 ECM outcomes for children and young people: Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution and Achieve Economic Wellbeing.

Children and young people should be encouraged to have a positive attitude towards their health and have the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about their health.

Aspects of PSHEe contribute to National Indicators:
112 - Under 18 Conception rate
115 - Substance Misuse by Young People.

Healthy Eating The Healthy Eating theme contributes significantly to the being healthy national outcome.

Children and young people should have the knowledge and skills to make healthy food choices and requires healthy and nutritious food and drink to be available across the school day.

The theme supports schools in their goals to improve all aspects of food in school through consultation with pupils, parents, carers, staff, governors and caterers

Healthy Eating contributes to National Indicators :
55 and 56 - Obesity.

PA The Physical Activity theme contributes significantly to the being healthy national outcome.

Children and young people should understand the health benefits of physical activity, be encouraged to be physically active and have the opportunity to participate in a range of physical activities within and outside of the school day.

The Physical Activity theme supports schools to promote activities within and outside the curriculum and to develop a physical environment which encourages the whole school community to be active

Physical Activity contributes to National Indicators:
55 and 56 – Obesity
57 - Children and Young People's Participation in Sport.

EHWB The Emotional Health and Well-being theme contributes to all 5 ECM outcomes for children and young people.

Children and young people should be encouraged to understand and express their feelings and develop confidence and emotional resilience in order to achieve their full potential and therefore their capacity to learn.

EHWB specifically contributes to National Indicator :
50 - Emotional Health of Children.
