| What are you waiting for...? |
|
Over 80 schools in Nottingham City have already developed Healthy
Schools Programme accredited drug policy and curriculum through
our support packages over the past 2 years.
We run free, bespoke training and support packages for primary and
secondary schools to develop their curriculum and programmes for
Drug Education so that they meet the required standard and ensure
that the work counts as evidence for Ofsted and Healthy Schools
Accreditation.
Nottingham Children's Services has a drug education and policy advisor located within the Healthy Schools Team to support Head Teachers and staff to address the issues related to drugs, tobacco and alcohol and to put in place robust education programmes, incident practice and policy and early identification/referral systems. Nottingham City Childrens Services for Education has developed a range of tools, training and resources to help you do this. This support is available to Nottingham City Schools at no cost. | Are you meeting the requirements for Drug
Education? |
All school are required to
have a current drugs, alcohol and tobacco policy.
What should be in place?
The school should have a drugs, alcohol and tobacco policy that
includes:
- A nominated drugs coordinator
- A nominated lead governor (desirable but not statutory)
- The school's response to drug related incidents (taking account
of the guidance regarding vulnerable pupils)
- How the school will liaise with the police / support pupils
- An outline of the teacher-led drug education
curriculum showing progression year on year (with a statement
of how any external providers will contribute to this planning)
And that:
- Takes account of local circumstances
- Is developed through a whole-school consultation process
- Considers the needs of the pupils and the school
- Meets the National Healthy School Standard
To enable schools to do this we are putting increased resources
towards supporting schools with drug and sex and relationships education.
Over 70 schools have successfully participated in our support programmes
so far. |

| How do I access free support? |
| There are a few basic steps to meeting
the Healthy School Standard for Drug, Tobacco and Alcohol Education,
we will support you every step of the way to reach the standard
as quickly and painlessly as possible.
- An initial meeting with a Healthy Schools Programme
Advisor to outline the context for policy and programme
for drugs and alcohol. It will enable you to guage how much work
you will need to do to meet the requirements. We will provide
materials at the initial meeting which contain information, audits
for policy and programme, consultation tools and everything you
need to plan for the work.
- Undertake some consultation with pupils, staff, parents, governors
and pupils on key aspects of drug policy and curriculum. If it
is possible to do this before the workday it will speed up the
implementation process. If not, we can action plan for it to happen
at the next possible opportunity. Don't worry if you have concerns
about how to engage parents or pupils - we can share simple and
effective ways that have worked for the other 70 schools who have
done this already!
- Workdays / One to One Support or Inset.
This is where you spend supported time actually drafting the policy and
programme - based on what you already know and planning what needs
to be done to complete the task. You have the option to do this
with a school drug advisor at the Healthy Schools Base at College
Street or you can take non-contact time in school (or anywhere
you choose) to complete the work. We will reimburse supply cover
for up to 3 days in total per school to help you do this.
Please note: There is no long term parking at the College
St. Centre but we are only a short walk from Market Square multi-storey
car parks and tram/bus/park and ride stops
- Follow up.
After the drafting is complete we will support you back in school
in any way you need to complete the actions on your implementation
plan and get the policy ratified and disseminated and the programme
up and running. This includes any INSET required for staff or
governors or support with parent participation.
(we also offer a range of free, professionally facilitated sessions
that you may wish to run for parents to engage them with drugs
issues and to enable them to feedback their views).
All you need to do is contact
us and we can take it from there...
For currently available general
training see events diary >> |
| If you think you already meet the requirements... |
Then please let us know so that we
can award you Healthy Schools Programme Accreditation for your work.
We can arrange to assess the work you have done as part of the Standard
for PSHE. Accreditation through The Healthy Schools Programme for
Drug Policy and Programme counts as evidence for your Ofsed self
evaluation form.
You will need evidence of the following to receive accreditation:
- Scheme of work for teacher-led Drug Education with timetabling
arrangements, long and medium term planning and resources used.
- Arrangements for target work with vulnerable pupils
- support agencies supporting school
- a drugs policy that meets with the Dfes Drugs Guidance for Schools
- ratification by governors
- evidence of staff, pupil and parent consultations in relation
to the policy and ideally programme.
